The charming countryside of Crete provides the backdrop to this pleasant half-day excursion. Of the three great mountain ranges of Crete, you will be exploring the easternmost, Mt. Dikti, ascending to a level of 3,000 feet. From this vantage point in the island's interior, enjoy the ever-changing view of the green-carpeted, rural landscape, dotted with picturesque villages.
The first stop on this magnificent mountain route will be at the monastery of Kera, which is adorned with 14th century wall paintings. Originally named Kardiotissa, it was built in the 17th century and dedicated to the Virgin of Kera. You will have approximately 45 minutes here to tour the monastery and see the lovely Byzantine icons contained within the church.
Continuing the ascent along a beautifully wooded route, you will arrive at the plateau of Lassithi. The view of the encircling mountains is absolutely breathtaking from here, as you drink in the fertile landscape below, which is irrigated by the power of windmills. Be sure to bring your camera.
Before returning to the ship, you will stop at the Seli restaurant, where you might try traditional Cretan mezedes and enjoy the warm, friendly atmosphere.
Please note: Walking on this tour is mainly at the guest's discretion at the stops, although it will at times be over uneven ground. While there are some steps to negotiate at the Monastery, it is permissable to remain on the coach if you choose. The tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina.
